Prologue to a Ghost Story

My love has eyes that glitter like

A coin that drops in the sea

And when he laughs he rings about

The rivers and fields of the valley.

The nights we lay beneath the leaves

Like figures wrapped in the snow

I never guessed the moon would speak

In dreams of the sea, calling him to follow.

The roses by the waterside

The crimson rose and lily

Are swaying by the riverside

Where he waited, with roses picked for me.

He promised me he would return

And left for sea the next day

And gave me roses for my heart

But time like a fire soon would take them away.

The roses by the waterside

The crimson rose and lily

Are swaying by the riverside

Where I waited, with roses picked for me.

I waited by the riverside

As people moved around me

Now forty years have passed and I

Will go in the dawn, to the sound of the sea.

For yesterday I found his bones

Where he had slipped in the tide

Not half a mile from where he left

A long time ago by the riverside.

The roses by the waterside

The crimson rose and lily

Still sway beside the riverside

Where he’s waiting, with roses picked for me.
